An A-rated boiler is a model that is among the most efficient on the market. Efficiency is calculated by working out how much of the fuel used to power the boiler is turned into usable energy for heating your radiators and hot water. Those that waste the most energy receive the lowest rating, while those that are most efficient are declared A-rated boilers.
This rating system allows you to choose your new boiler, confident in the knowledge that there will be as little waste as possible. There are two main benefits to fitting an A-rated boiler. Firstly, the less wasted fuel there is, the lower your energy bills become. Over winter, around 60% of the average home’s gas bill is made up by the cost of heating the property. This means that there are significant savings to be had from installing an A-rated boiler. Secondly, these boilers are also better for the environment, as you are using less fuel to power your central heating and hot water.
If you have an old and inefficient boiler, it is worth looking into installing a new A-rated boiler from Clever Energy Boilers. Keep reading to find out more about boiler ratings and how they are determined, as well as the best energy efficient gas boilers on the market.
Advantages of Installing an A-Rated Boiler:
- Save money on heating bills
- Less wasted energy
- Reduce your carbon footprint
Boiler Ratings Explained
ErP stands for Energy-related Products Directive. This is a European standard for efficiency and is used to determine which models are declared an A-rated boiler. It came into action in September 2015, replacing the previous SEDBUK ratings. The new system was intended to phase out older and less efficient models by providing a clear indicator to consumers about the efficiency of their new boiler and allowing them to make a more informed decision. This is part of a plan to cut carbon emissions across the continent.
The ErP ratings run from A++ to G, with A++ being the most efficient and G indicating the least efficient models. All boiler models are tested to determine their efficiency and the relevant rating is awarded to them.
You will find the boiler ErP rating on a label supplied with the product. You can see all of the ratings colour coded on the supplied diagram. The most efficient are green and the least efficient are red. An arrow points to the rating of the product in question and you can see the rating for both central heating and hot water too.
Differences Between Boiler ErP Rating and SEDBUK Rating
The previous rating system for boilers was the SEDBUK rating. This used to be displayed as a letter, with A-rated boilers being the most efficient. However, following the introduction of the boiler ErP rating, it changed to a percentage to avoid confusion.
Showing efficiency as a percentage is a good way of calculating the savings that you are likely to make by installing an A-rated boiler. For example, a boiler that is 92% efficient means that 92% of the fuel used to power the boiler is turned into heat. This means that 92p in every £1 you spend on using your boiler is paying for the energy that is keeping you warm. With a boiler that provides only 70% efficiency, 30p in every £1 on your bill is wasted just operating the device.
There are two different types of SEDBUK rating; SEDBUK 2005 and SEDBUK 2009. The latter is the latest version, using percentages rather than letters.
All new boilers installed today must offer efficiency of 92% or more, which makes them all A-rated boilers. You will find that many manufacturers show both the boiler ErP rating and the SEDBUK rating too, as the latter offers a more precise way of rating the efficiency. In reality, the saving between running a boiler with 92% efficiency and one with 94% efficiency are minimal. However, you can save up to around £340 a year on your energy bills by replacing an older, G-rated boiler with a brand new A-rated boiler.
Is My Boiler Energy Efficient?
You may be able to find out the original efficiency of an old boiler by searching for the ErP or SEDBUK label on the unit. However, the energy efficiency of a boiler when new is very different from the efficiency after a number of years.
There are ways to use your boiler more efficiently. Regular servicing by a professional gas engineer helps to keep it running as smoothly as possible. They will clean the system to remove dirt and help prevent corrosion in the boiler, which helps maintain efficiency. Clever Energy Boilers offer a number of Clever Care Plans, all of which include an annual boiler service among many other benefits.
Other ways to increase the efficiency of your boiler include replacing your radiators, deep cleaning the piping in your home, and updating your temperature controls. Ensuring the heating settings are appropriate for each season can also help your boiler maintain lower levels of waste. Making it work too hard in summer, when it is not necessary, will see it wear out more quickly.
The only way to guarantee A-rated efficiency is to install a new A-rated boiler in your home.
