Because the boiler can’t verify what’s happening at the burner, it shuts down as a safety measure. You’ll usually lose heating, hot water, or both, and the boiler won’t restart on its own.

If you can smell gas at any point, don’t touch the boiler. Turn the gas off at the meter if it’s safe to do so, open windows, avoid light switches, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
How To Fix The Worcester Bosch EA Fault Code
There are a few safe checks worth doing before you call anyone out.
- Check whether your other gas appliances are working. If the hob and gas fire are dead too, the problem is your gas supply, not the boiler.
- Check the gas meter is turned on, and if you’re on a prepayment meter, that there’s credit on it.
- In cold weather, check the condensate pipe — the white plastic pipe running from the boiler to an outside drain. A gurgling noise from the boiler often points to a blockage here.
- If it’s frozen, thaw it with warm water poured along its length, or hold a hot water bottle against it. Never use boiling water, as it can crack the pipe.
- Press the reset button and give the boiler a minute to attempt ignition.
If it fires up and stays running, the fault’s cleared. If it locks out again, stop there.
Don’t reset the boiler more than two or three times. Repeated resetting won’t fix a failing component, and it means the boiler is repeatedly attempting to release gas into a system that isn’t lighting it.

If the EA error code clears on a reset but then returns, something is stopping the boiler establishing a flame each time.
Ignition electrodes are the usual suspect. They wear down, carbon up, or drift out of the correct gap over years of firing, and they’re a routine replacement part. Gas valves fail less often but produce the same code. A partially blocked flue or a condensate pipe that only freezes in the coldest hours can make the fault feel random and intermittent.
Either way, resetting buys you a few hours at best.
Repair Or Replace? How To Tell With An EA Fault
An EA fault on its own doesn’t mean you need a new boiler. On a three-year-old Worcester Bosch in a cold snap, it’s usually a frozen condensate pipe and nothing more.
It’s worth thinking seriously about replacement when:
- The boiler is over 10 to 12 years old
- EA has come back repeatedly over a season
- You’ve already paid for one or more repairs in the last couple of years
