An A1 on your Worcester Bosch is a pump and water fault: the boiler has detected that the pump is stuck, running dry or working against air, and often that comes down to low pressure in the system. We’re Clever Energy Boilers, Gas Safe registered and accredited Worcester Bosch installers based in Bingley, covering Yorkshire and the Humber, the North West and the Midlands. If your Worcester is an older boiler that keeps displaying error codes, a replacement Worcester Bosch boiler is the better option longer term for efficiency and for saving on repair bills.
A1 is one of the codes where a homeowner can do something useful. Topping up pressure takes a few minutes and costs nothing. Here’s what the code means on different models, how to top up safely, and when it’s time to hand it over.
What does the A1 error code mean on a Worcester Bosch?
The meaning shifts a little between models, which is why the same code can read differently in different places. On the Greenstar i it’s a pump stuck or running dry. On Si and CDi Compact boilers it appears as A1 281, a pump stuck or running with air in the system. On the CDi Classic Combi, water leaking is a possibility, or a pump that needs freeing or replacing. On the Highflow it’s dry-run detection, so check pressure first.
Some guides treat it as a straightforward low-pressure fault, others as a pump fault. In practice both can be true, so the pressure gauge is always the first thing to read.
What causes an A1 fault on a Worcester boiler?
- Low pressure from a small leak, or after bleeding radiators
- Air trapped in the system or pump
- A pump that has seized after months unused
- A worn pump that is failing
- A leaking pipe, joint or radiator valve
Our guides on boiler airlocks and a boiler pump not working cover the last few in more depth.
How do I top up the pressure to clear a Worcester A1 error?
Start with the gauge on the front of the boiler or underneath it.
- With the boiler cold, read the needle. You want roughly 1 to 1.5 bar. Below 1 bar is too low.
- Switch the boiler off.
- Find the filling loop, a braided hose under the boiler with a valve at each end. Check that it is connected at both ends.
- Open one valve fully, then open the other slowly. You’ll hear water flowing.
- Watch the gauge. When it reaches about 1.2 bar, close both valves firmly.
- Detach the loop if it’s removable. Switch the boiler back on, and press reset if needed.
Don’t go above 2 bar. If the pressure rises too high, bleed a little water from a radiator.
What if the pressure keeps falling after an A1 fault?
A system that loses pressure is leaking somewhere. Look for damp patches, drips under radiators and wet floors near pipework, and read our guide to the common causes of a leaking boiler. A hidden leak needs a Gas Safe registered engineer or plumber to track down. Topping up over and over just hides it.
Could the Worcester Bosch pump itself be causing the A1 code?
If the pressure is fine and A1 persists, the pump may be stuck or worn. A pump that is humming but not turning, or noisy and running hot, is a sign. Freeing or replacing it is work for a Gas Safe registered engineer. Don’t try to open the pump housing.
Is a Worcester A1 error dangerous?
No. It’s a protective shutdown, because running a boiler with no water circulating would damage it. If you smell gas at any point, call 0800 111 999 and leave the boiler alone.
When does a new Worcester Bosch make sense after an A1 fault?
Repeated A1 faults often mean a worn pump or a system that has begun to leak. If your boiler is over 8 years old, a replacement Worcester Bosch is usually the better long-term option: it’s more efficient, and it ends the cycle of topping up and call-outs. We’ll also advise on flushing or filters so the new boiler isn’t working against old sludge.

Worcester Bosch A1 fault code FAQs
What pressure should a Worcester boiler be at to avoid an A1 error?
Roughly 1 to 1.5 bar when cold. It rises a little when the heating is on, which is normal.
Is the Worcester A1 fault code always low pressure?
No. It can also be a stuck pump or air in the pump. Low pressure is just the easiest thing to check first.
Can I top up the pressure myself on a Worcester Bosch?
Yes, using the filling loop with the boiler off. Stop at around 1.2 to 1.5 bar and close both valves firmly.
Why does my Worcester pressure keep dropping and bringing the error back?
Most likely a leak somewhere in the system. That needs tracing by an engineer.
Is it worth replacing a Worcester with a failing pump and repeat fault codes?
On an older Worcester, usually yes. The boiler is likely to have other ageing parts, and a new one is more efficient.
