Worcester Bosch 227 Fault Code: Causes, Meaning & How to Fix

Worcester Bosch 227 Fault Code: Causes, Meaning & How to Fix

A 227 on a Worcester Bosch display means the boiler tried to light, waited for a flame signal and heard nothing back, so it shut itself down to stay safe. We’re Clever Energy Boilers: Gas Safe registered, accredited Worcester Bosch installers based in Bingley, fitting boilers across Yorkshire and the Humber, the North West and the Midlands. If your Worcester is an older one that keeps showing error codes like this, a replacement Worcester Bosch boiler is the better option longer term, both for efficiency and for saving on repair bills.

Over the last 15 years we’ve completed more than 25,000 installations, so this code is a familiar sight. Below you’ll find what it means, what usually causes it, the checks that are safe to try yourself, and the point where it stops being a job for the homeowner.

What does the Worcester Bosch 227 error code mean?

Most Worcester displays show a letter pair followed by a three-digit number. On the Greenstar i, and on the Si and CDi Compact boilers, you’ll see “EA 227”. The “EA” is the fault group (no flame detected) and “227” is the cause code that pinpoints the problem inside that group. On a Greenstar 8000 Style the display shows 227 on its own, sometimes with a letter beside it.

Either way, the story is the same. The boiler opened the gas valve, sparked, and its sensor never picked up a flame. After a few tries it locks out. If you want the broader picture of the EA group, our EA fault code guide covers it; this page is about the 227 detail.

Why is my Worcester showing a 227 fault?

A flame that won’t light or won’t stay lit usually comes down to one of these:

  • A gas supply problem, such as a closed valve, an empty prepayment meter or a supply interruption in your street
  • A worn or dirty ignition electrode, or a damaged lead
  • A blocked condensate trap or sump leaving moisture where the flame sensor sits
  • A frozen condensate pipe in cold weather
  • Strong wind pushing back down the flue
  • A gas valve coil that has come loose or failed
  • Low system pressure, which can stop the boiler firing
  • On a Greenstar 8000 Style, a burner control unit that has reached the end of its life

The first four are the ones a homeowner can reasonably look at. The rest need a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Is the Worcester Bosch 227 fault dangerous?

The code itself isn’t. It means the safety system did its job and cut the gas when no flame was proven. The boiler won’t restart until it’s reset, which is exactly what you want.

The thing to watch for is a smell of gas. If you notice one, open windows, don’t touch any switches, turn the gas off at the meter and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Don’t wait to see whether the code clears.

What can I safely check at home when my Worcester shows a 227 error?

Work through these in order. None of them involve opening the boiler.

  1. Check other gas appliances. If the hob won’t light either, the problem is the supply, not the boiler. Check your meter credit and the gas isolation valve.
  2. Look at the pressure gauge. A cold boiler should sit at roughly 1 to 1.5 bar. If it’s below 1 bar, top it up (see below).
  3. Check the condensate pipe. In freezing weather, look at the plastic pipe that runs outside. If it’s frozen, pour warm water over it, never boiling, and give it a few minutes.
  4. Reset once. Use the reset button after the checks and see whether the boiler fires.

Topping up the pressure. Switch the boiler off and let it cool. Find the filling loop, the braided hose under the boiler, and make sure both ends are attached. Open the valves slowly, watch the gauge climb to about 1 to 1.5 bar, then close both valves firmly. Detach the loop if it’s removable. If the pressure drops again within days, you have a leak, and that needs an engineer.

When should I stop resetting the 227 error and get a Gas Safe engineer?

If the code returns after one reset, stop pressing the button. Repeated resets just keep trying to light a boiler that isn’t proving a flame, and they can hide a faulty electrode or gas valve. Electrode, gas valve and control unit work is for a Gas Safe registered engineer only. Never take the casing off yourself.

Why does the Worcester 227 fault code keep coming back?

A fault that clears and returns is usually a part on its way out: an electrode that sparks on some days and not others, or a condensate trap that fills up in wet or cold weather. A reset buys you a few days at most. On an older boiler, one call-out tends to lead to another.

Is a 227 error a sign you need a new Worcester Bosch boiler?

A single 227 on a young boiler is often a cheap fix. The picture changes when the boiler is older. Think about replacing it if:

  • The boiler is over 8 years old, as boilers beyond that age become noticeably less efficient
  • You’ve needed more than one engineer visit in a year
  • You’re resetting it every few days to keep the heating on
  • Parts are getting harder to find for your model
  • Your gas bills have crept up without your usage changing

A new Worcester Bosch boiler gets you a modern, efficient unit and an end to the cycle of fault codes. Our guide to new boiler costs explains what to expect.

Worcester Bosch 227 fault code FAQs

What does the number after EA mean on a Worcester Bosch error code?

It narrows the fault down. EA says the boiler didn’t detect a flame, and 227 confirms it happened after ignition, so the gas valve opened and the sensor saw nothing.

Can I reset a Worcester EA 227 fault myself?

Yes, once, after you’ve checked the pressure, the gas supply and the condensate pipe. If it locks out again, call a Gas Safe registered engineer rather than resetting over and over.

Why does the Worcester 227 error code appear mostly in winter?

Cold weather freezes the condensate pipe and makes blockages more likely, and both can stop a flame from being proven. Pouring warm water over the frozen section often clears it.

Is EA 227 the same as the plain Worcester EA fault code?

They’re closely related. EA is the group and 227 is the specific cause inside it. Our EA fault code guide covers the wider group.

Does a Worcester 227 fault mean I need a new boiler?

Not on its own. If the boiler is over 8 years old and codes keep returning, though, replacing it is usually the cheaper route over time.
