Why Is My Radiator Cold at the Bottom?

A radiator that’s warm at the top but cold at the bottom is almost always full of sludge. Black iron oxide builds up inside steel radiators and pipework over the years, settles at the bottom of the panel and stops hot water flowing through it. Bleeding won’t fix it. The radiator, or the whole system, needs flushing.

We’re Clever Energy Boilers, a Gas Safe registered (no. 554138) and Worcester Bosch accredited heating installer based in Bingley. We look at a lot of tired central heating systems across Yorkshire, the North West and the Midlands, and sludge is one of the most common reasons radiators stop pulling their weight.

What is radiator sludge?

Radiator sludge is a thick black or brown sediment made mostly of rust (magnetite) from the inside of steel radiators and pipes. It forms slowly as water reacts with metal, and it’s heavy, so it sinks to the bottom of the radiator where it blocks the flow.

Systems that haven’t had inhibitor added, have had leaks topped up with fresh water many times, or were never cleaned when a new boiler went in are the most likely to suffer.

Cold at the bottom or cold at the top: what’s the difference?

Where the cold patch sits tells you what’s wrong.

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Cold at the bottom, hot at the top Sludge Flush the radiator or power flush the system
Cold at the top, hot at the bottom Trapped air Bleed the radiator
Cold in the middle Sludge, often heavy Flush the radiator
Cold all over, pipes hot Stuck valve Check the TRV and lockshield valve

Cold at the top? Our radiator bleeding guide will sort it in a few minutes.

Why is my radiator hot at the top but cold at the bottom?

Because sludge has settled along the bottom of the panel. Hot water enters the radiator and flows across the top, but it can’t get through the packed sediment lower down, so the bottom stays cold. The same thing causes cold spots in the middle of a radiator when the build-up is heavy.

How do I know it’s sludge?

There are a few giveaway signs. The water that comes out when you bleed a radiator is dark or black. Several radiators have cold bottoms, not just one. The radiators furthest from the boiler are worst. And sometimes the boiler itself starts to sound noisy or kettle-like because sludge is restricting flow through it.

How do I fix a radiator that’s cold at the bottom?

You’ve got three options, depending on how bad it is and how many radiators are affected.

Can I flush a single radiator myself?

If you’re confident with basic plumbing, yes. It means turning the heating off, closing both valves, draining the radiator, taking it off the wall and hosing it out outside until the water runs clear. It’s messy and you’ll need to repressurise the system afterwards. If that sounds like too much, a heating engineer can do it for you.

When does the whole system need a power flush?

If several radiators are cold at the bottom, the sludge is spread through the system and cleaning one radiator won’t last. A power flush pumps cleaning chemicals through the pipes and radiators at high flow to lift the deposits out. Our post on power flushing your heating system explains what’s involved.

Does a chemical cleaner help?

A system cleaner added to the water can loosen light sludge over a few weeks. It works best on systems with mild build-up and is usually followed by draining, refilling and adding inhibitor.

How do I stop sludge coming back?

Three things make the biggest difference:

  • A magnetic filter fitted on the return pipe to the boiler, which catches iron particles before they settle.
  • Inhibitor in the system water, which slows down corrosion.
  • An annual service, where the filter gets cleaned and the water checked. Our Clever Care servicing plans include a yearly service and heating cover for one monthly payment.

Can sludge damage my boiler?

Yes. Sludge travels round to the boiler and clogs the heat exchanger and pump, which are two of the most expensive parts to replace. Look out for kettling noises, the boiler overheating or locking out, and radiators taking longer to warm up. Our guides on a faulty heat exchanger and a boiler pump that isn’t working cover the knock-on problems.

Is it worth getting a new boiler and a clean system together?

If your boiler is over 8 years old and the system is badly sludged, doing both at once makes sense. A new boiler fitted onto a dirty system won’t last as long, so it’s the ideal time to clean everything out.

When we fit a new boiler, we clean the system and fit a magnetic filter as part of the job. Find out more about our boiler replacement service. Prices are fixed, and your new boiler can be backed by a long, market-leading warranty from Clever Energy. If some of your radiators are past saving, our central heating team can upgrade those too.

Radiator cold at the bottom FAQs

Will bleeding a radiator fix it being cold at the bottom?

No. Bleeding releases air from the top of the radiator. A cold bottom is caused by sludge, which needs flushing out.

Why is my new radiator cold at the bottom?

A new radiator connected to a dirty system can pick up sludge quickly. It can also be a sign the system needs balancing or the valve isn’t fully open.

Do I need to flush every radiator?

Only if they’re all affected. One cold radiator can be flushed on its own. Several cold radiators usually mean the whole system needs a power flush.

How do I get rid of cold spots on a radiator?

Cold spots at the top need bleeding. Cold spots at the bottom or in the middle need the radiator flushing, or a power flush if several radiators are affected.

How long does sludge take to build up?

It varies, but systems without inhibitor or a filter can develop noticeable sludge within a few years.
