What is an Oil Fired Boiler?
Oil fired boilers provide an alternative to natural gas and are often used in properties which are not connected to the gas network. There are around four million such homes in the UK, many of which opt for oil or LPG boilers. With an oil fired boiler, you need a storage tank in which to keep the fuel that you will use to heat your radiators and water. For some people, these are situated on the property and used exclusively by one home. On many estates, there is a communal storage tank used by a number of different homes.
The oil fuels the boiler, which heats up the water that runs around your central heating system and warms your radiators. It also allows the boiler to heat the water for your hot taps too. Oil fired boilers offer an incredible amount of heat for your money, with most new models offering well over 90% efficiency. This is good news for your heating bills as well as for the environment.
LPG boilers work in much the same way, but use liquid petroleum gas, rather than oil. You also need to install either an individual or shared storage tank for the LPG, but thanks to its density, you can store a large amount in a fairly small space. The efficiency you find in an LPG boiler is similar to that of a natural gas boiler.
There are some differences between using oil and LPG boilers. For example, oil fired boilers are usually cheaper to run. However, if you choose LPG, you can also use that gas to power your hobs and oven for cooking, which you cannot with oil.
